Apple Introduces MacBook Air

MacBook Air

Apple today announced the launch of the world’s thinnest laptop - the MacBook Air. It’s allegedly thinner than my iPhone, which I’m really struggling to get my head around, and it’s aimed at competing with similar, business-type laptops on the market today.

My initial thoughts are that this laptop is going to struggle to sell in South Africa. Due to it being so small, the MacBook Air has no DVD drive, no Ethernet port, an extremely small 80GB hard drive and only has one USB port, one micro-DVI adapter plus a headphone jack. It relies solely on installing applications through a Wi-Fi connection so if you haven’t bought that Wi-Fi router for home yet - nows the time.

MacBook Air is powered by a 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB L2 cache, and includes as standard features 2GB of memory, an 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive, and the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi technology and Bluetooth 2.1. It is available from ZA Store for a suggested retail price of R16,999.

We’re definitely going to try and get a review unit from Apple to see if we can overcome these barriers and give it a more positive review.
