Fujifilm FinePix, 12megapixel Digital Camera

February 11, 2008 - By Guest Reviewer

It’s been about 4 years since I last purchased a digital camera. So in December I decided it was time to upgrade. After much shopping around and research online I found myself a deal.

finepix_featured.jpgThe Fujifilm FinePix F50d is a whopping camera for a very fair deal (at least I think it was a fair deal).

I headed down to Sandton City and shopped around for this camera. I was offered under-water deals, cheap deals, expensive deals and more. I settled on this camera because I thought it was reasonably priced, the offer included a fantastic 4Gb of memory (two, 2Gb memory cards) and a camera case.

Now I can go on and on about features, megapixels and the like but let’s be honest, who cares? Cause to be honest, most people without a serious eye for photography or training could tell the difference between 12, 10 or 8 mega-anything. But nonetheless it always sounds better when there is more to speak of. 12 Megapixels it was.

This camera takes incredibly photographs for the point-and-shoot requirements that I have at the moment. I took a leap of faith in the complex extras that this camera has. But it wasn’t too difficult to figure out how to change the settings on the camera so that photos are immediately suitable for Flickr, Facebook, Blogging or any other format that you require. The largest photo this camera takes is 4000 x 3000 pixels, scaling down to a manageable size.

Video is great too, I filmed the entire speech that Nelson Mandela made at last years 46664 concert, have a look:

With the 2Gb memory card in there and an average camera setting for quality I can take up to 3000 photographs or up to an hour of video. Pretty good by my standards. All in all I would definitely suggest this camera as one to watch, purchase, use and generally get your hands on. The photos are clear, the video is stable, face recognition is available and a must and extra camera stability is provided for too.In a nutshell:Price: R3500
Extras: Camera case, 4Gb memory
Available: Sandton City
Specs: See the Fujifilm website

I am also busy looking for a new digital camera. My Fujifilm S5100 is taking some serious strain of late - the pics are just not as good as some of my mates cheaper point and shoot camera’s.

I was just wondering, did you have a look at Canon’s range of Powershot point and shoot cameras? They seem to be damn popular on Flickr.

12 Megapixels is very attractive at R3500, however it should be noted by the potential consumer that it is a far better choice to purchase a good quality lower megapixel camera than one of these high megapixel cheap cameras. Simply its got to do with quality and secondly features.

At R3500 I think this camera falls into a very obscure bracket that being the potential serious photographer on a budget,,,there are far better cameras at this price for both the serious and casual photographer.

@JDrugmore - I think you have a great point. However personally I could easily have looked at DSLR cameras and headed in to spend well over R20 000 withough blinknig and that camera wouldn’t have even been a good DSLR. So I steered clear there.

I am sure that there are cameras out there that might perform better here and there, but on the whole I am getting a great experience, with good video, audio and picture quality. I couldn’t imagine buying a high quality point and shoot with a 5 megapixel camera when some phones have that option.

@JBagley - I did look at the powershot and they were nifty, neat, did the job and nice and solid. I took a bit of risk with FujiFilm and didn’t go with a trusted brand and one that I have used extensively in the past (like Canon). So I suppose it is a great brand and a solid camera, but just wasn’t what I was interested in on a personal level.

It’s hard to go wrong with a Canon or Nikon I suppose.

Fuji do make decent camera’s. When mine came out, it definitely was one of the top 3 in its bracket. I was just curious to find out if you did consider the Canon range.

    Cool stuff!

It is pointless comparing a cell phone with a 5 mega pixel camera, and a dedicated 5 mega pixel camera. The camera will always come out tops because of lense, flash and features.

I have to agree JasonD. I wouldn’t know what to do with 12Megapixels. I only print post card size pictures. I would rather spend on optical zoom and stability control…
