Nokia unveils the Nokia 2600 Classic

February 28, 2008 - By Justin Hartman

Nokia 2600 ClassicYesterday Nokia launched the new Nokia 2600 Classic cellphone at a small media briefing held at Zoo Lake, Johannesburg.

The 2600 Classic is a mid-range phone that features a full colour screen, VGA camera, Video recorder and FM player. Additionally it comes with Bluetooth, MP3 ringtones and an internal memory of 10MB that can’t, unfortunately, be upgraded.

Raymond Fritz, Nokia’s GTM head of sales for South Africa, says they have high expectations for the 2600 Classic because, he claims, there are no other phones in this price range that offer such an array of features.

I had an opportunity to play with the phone and I’m impressed with what it can do. It’s extremely light, very thin and it almost feels like you’re not even holding a phone.

One of the most interesting features of the phone is the new “prepaid tracker” which works in conjunction with the mobile network operators to cap call usage on the phone. This will be a great feature for families wanting to give prepaid phones to children as it gives the parents complete control over billing thereby avoiding any nasty surprises at the end of the month.

I have to admit I was expecting a poorly designed, featureless phone but I’m pleasantly surprised with what Nokia have done with the 2600 Classic.

According to Fritz the phone will be available mid- to end-March and will cost less than R1,000. A good investment considering you get four and half days battery life as well as a free headset so you can use the FM radio.

ok? Soam i geting this right? they wanted to bring out a well priced phone with Classic Nokia functionality? In otherwords, technophobes And/or those who dont wish to watch live television, or read the news online from their cellphones, now dont have to Pay for all those well expensive accessories that they will probably never use? For less than a grand that sounds awesome, BUT aside from the mp3 player, there are surely many cheaper alternatives with similar functionality? or am i missing something? Perhaps i should do a little more research before i start penny pinching tho i guess.
