Win an HP 2133 Mini Notebook

September 30, 2008 - By Ian Barnes

The HP 2133 Mini notebook is the perfect companion for those who want to travel light, or the very space concious. Its a perfect travel companion weighing in at only 1.3Kgs and being slightly larger than an A5 sheet of paper - and that’s not its only trump card.

Read the rest of this review and then enter the competition to win our review unit valued at around R8,000.00.

The Details

  • Processor: 1.2GHz VIA C7-M ULV
  • Memory: 2GB, 667MHz DDR2
  • Hard drive: 120GB 7,200rpm
  • Chipset: Via CN896NB
  • Graphics: Via Chrome 9 HC IGP (integrated)
  • Operating System: Windows Vista Business
  • Dimensions (WDH): 16.5 x 26.4 x 2.7 Cm
  • Screen size (diagonal): 8.9 inches
  • System weight / Weight with AC adapter: 1.3 / 1.6 Kgs

First impressions

HP clearly know that a first impression is important and its clearly visible in the build quality and brushed metal finish of the notebook which starts you off impressed. It get even better when you open it up and discover its got an almost full sized keyboard (HP say its 92%) - so typing doesn’t require a whole new skills set.

The touch pad does however require some adapting as it is wide and shaped like an envelope. The left/right click buttons are on the left and right (respectively) which also make using it a little slower than when the buttons are in the normal position.

Putting it to good use

On the software front it doesn’t disappoint either - shipping with Windows Vista Business and once booted its not overloaded with useless software that would be un-installed anyway. The screen is sharp and runs at a resolution of 1280×768 which is leagues above all other competitors in the Ultra-Portable department.

Even though this notebook doesn’t have a built in CD/DVD drive it does come with 802.11a/b/g (WiFi) and a host of extra ports (LAN, 2 USB, SD Card reader, VGA Out and an express card) above and beyond the normal headphone and microphone ports. You shouldn’t need the headphone port though as the built in speakers are far superior to any other notebooks in this category and are clear and crisp enough to listen to video clips or your favourite music.

The battery was slightly disappointing only lasting around 2hours when running on 50% screen brightness and using the HP power saving setting. This said though on the higher end notebook you can get an extended battery which will double the time you get with the flush battery.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Lightweight and ultra-portable
  • Brilliant screen, viewing angles and brightness
  • Large HDD - 120Gig in a notebook this small!
  • Outstanding build quality and finishing

Cons:

  • Battery life - could have been a little longer
  • Processing power. I feel this is a slight under spec from HP.

Conclusion

This is a fantastic notebook in the Ultra-Portable series and will set the bar for competitors to strive towards.

Pricing and availability

The HP 2133 Mini Notebook is available exclusively from the HP Experience Store in Sandton City and retails for around R8,000.00.

Win our review unit

The competition closes on the 10th of October 2008 and will be notified by email.

Question: What is the size of the Hard drive in the unit we reviewed.

Please note that due to shipping restrictions this competition is only open to people living in South Africa.

Editors Note: The competition is now closed. Due to the large volumes of entries received we will only notify the winner on Monday morning (the 13th of October) after all the entries have been verified. We will be sure to update everyone as to who the winner is when the winner has been chosen

Wow good size and HDD 120 GIG

  21. Jayx on October 7th, 2008 11:07 pm

Somewhat pricey, but so was my dv9000 and I have not regretted buying it ever. HP knows the meaning of the term “build quality” and it is obvious that this mini notebook is no different.

I’d really dig to win it - awesome post/competition guys.

  22. Carl Topkin on October 7th, 2008 11:46 pm

  24. Bheki Khumalo on October 8th, 2008 7:29 am

Most of the times i have to travel and do presentation, I normaly use laptop from work which i have to return immediately. This work of art will come in handy with it’s size an added bonus. I cannot afford a laptop most importantly.

  25. Jerry Kale on October 8th, 2008 8:21 am

5 star rated, because with HP you will never go wrong, checkout the 120 Gig, come to me!

  26. Heinrich on October 8th, 2008 9:38 am

I cannot get the competition page to open. Will someone out there help me to get entered. I trust that there are many unselfish people out there.
Help me to get from the dark ages to the super fast lightning age of computers.
I promise if I win, I will learn how to 3G, word process and search for 10 words to express my thanks!!
By the way, it looks like a flippin good machine inside the covers and quite snazzy on the outside. It is the inside that matters I assume if I read all the reviews before my humble attempt. Does HDD mean high definition digital picture or sound

  27. Thully on October 8th, 2008 9:39 am

  38. Mamello on October 8th, 2008 2:35 pm

Its great that someone @HP has finally come up with a brilliant concept of travelling light with a portable gadget like the 2133. Its a great way to have access to your information without carrying a huge notebook that makes it difficult to carry around especially when attending meetings. Its actually fabulous that you can carry the note book with your Diary without being overloaded. This is what makes technology advancement so exciting.

  68. Matthew on October 11th, 2008 8:49 am

this may be a scam guys, they said the winner would be notified by email. so if you think about it, they can pick no winer or they can pick some one they know. i think we should phone the HP shop at sandton city.

  69. Henri Uitenweerde AKA Rhino on October 11th, 2008 8:57 am

Yes sure it could be a scam, which would mean they lose all their credibility… Fat chance, previous competition winners never complained before, Im sure they will announce the winner as soon as the winner responds to the email sent to announce him/her as the winner. I for one would have responded ages ago

  70. Ian Barnes on October 11th, 2008 9:30 am

@Mathew - I can guarantee you this is no scam, we are an Avusa Media entity and thus are fully credible. As is stated in the updated post we will be notifying the winner on Monday and will announce the winner publicly once we have had confirmed it with them.

Everyone: Thanks for all the entries - I can say that we have been completely blown away with the amount of entries and are busy verifying them as we speak! Once all the formalities with choosing a winner have been completed (which is random I may add) we will make a public announcement here on Nudjit. So be sure to check back for more great competitions and reviews coming soon!

  71. Matthew on October 11th, 2008 11:37 am

    awsum thanx

hello who won the lapyop ?

  75. Steven van Hemert on October 13th, 2008 11:59 am

To second what Ian has to say: as a reputable media house we have an excellent relationship with the associated industries we work with. For that reason we will have many, many giveaways on this site throughout the year, and I can assure you they are all 100% legitimate. I know its hard to believe we simply give this stuff away, but there you go - our jobs depend on us being absolutely above board, and the perks are really in the joy of seeing you folks freak out when you get a free 8 grand laptop. So, we do it all for you guys… Shucks.

Check back tomorrow for a new giveaway, its a good one too.
